As some of you may know I've worked on and off for the past few years on Dr Who, designing and creating some of the fabulous alien characters with Millennium FX, the talented folk responsible for the series' prosthetics and creature effects. We try very hard to keep any new creatures or characters out of the public eye but sometimes (largely due to the intense interest shown by the shows' dedicated fans) it's just impossible! Yesterday (18th March) within hours of finishing filming the latest episode in a breezy Cardiff park images of the newest creature appeared on the internet. I'm not going to provide links here as I feel I'm still bound by the NDA (non disclosure agreement) I sign for each season but a simple Google search, for those of you interested in spoilers, will find you eyeball to eyestalk with the newest addition to the Dr Who menagerie. Enjoy!

Once the show has aired I will post my own pics of the beastie, of whom I'm very proud!!

:D

PS…..lol….now buzzfeed have published more pics with yours truly heavily featured….there goes my career…..!!!

Finally found it! From the elusive Bigfoot angle the photo's taken at the alien looks great. Wish I could praise you more on how it looks but, yeah, spoilers. When does this episode air?

Over here the season is split into two halves, six episodes air in Spring/Summer and six in Autumn/Winter….I believe this episode is for the Spring half. But when you'll get it in the US I don't know.

Your television seasons split like most of the ones over here!
I'll try to keep an eye out for it. Do you know the episode title, or would that be another spoiler as well?

I'm not sure if telling the title would constitute a breach of contract on my part….so sorry, to be on the safe side I'll have to say I'm not at liberty to mention it on a public forum like DA at the moment.

Often episode titles change anyway so it's shooting title might be totally different to the open finally used. I attended a meeting yesterday about the next two shooting blocks (episodes) and one of the titles has been changed already from the one on my script!

I had to look....  When it comes to creatures I just can't wait.  Mostly because of the long time span between shows being run.  Won't spoil it for others though.  Just wanted to say I think it looks great!  Can't wait to see how involved it will be and the the personality/temperament/etc. it will have.

To be honest these crafty peeks of The (censored) won't ruin the show for you. The leaked pics really don't show him (or is it a her?) at his (her) best or even as you see him (her) in the episode. I'm immensely proud of the work that went into him (her) and think we've raised the bar yet again for Dr Who aliens……it's a GREAT story too!!

There was some talk of building a film studio not far from where I live.  I was hoping really hard, but it looks like it's come to naught.  So, there goes my idea of an apprenticeship or some such.  And since I don't get TV anymore, I'll just have to be a sneak and go search for your creations online!

Well, I *do* have a TV in the corner that's rather neglected.  And I've got a pair of air antennas that I can pick up the public TV station.  It's mainly a cost/time thing.  I can't afford the better channels, and I can't afford the time!

I hear you on both the time and financial costs. I pay a lot for my satellite TV and it really doesn't get used that much. I have a friend who has a TV but no ariel for picking up the stations, he simply uses it to watch DVD's on….that's probably what I should do!

Are you able to talk at all about the season? Like, if I asked you something along the lines of "There was a promo/film shot showing Capaldi and Coleman in a shot that was nearly identical to Pertwee. Is Capaldi's doctor similar in personality to any previous doctor", would you be able to answer that?

Peter Capaldi is playing the Dr. his way…it seems a quieter, more understated take on the character as opposed to matt smith's more energetic approach. Each actor wants to give the character their own spin so I can't see any of them basing their Dr. on any previous ones.

There's always a transition period between Doctors as the writers get used to the new actor and learn to taylor their dialogue to fit the new version….in the episode we just shot for instance their was dialogues that I could imagine Matt saying. It's like a new relationship….it takes a little time for everyone to get used to each other.

Ah, as costume design, you don't get a chance to see the scripts, I take it? I also take it that you're speaking from what you've witnessed as he has acted for the first few episodes as well.

Oh, anyway, the reason I asked that before was because of these two images. So uncanny that they are in the exact same pose!

The last one, wasn't from filming, but rehearsal or them just talking and pointing at stuff?

Well first off I'm not a costume designer but a prosthetics/creature designer and yes I do get all the scripts.

I think the pointing poses are just coincidence…fans sometimes find connections and 'conspiracy theories' where there really are none. When I did The Silence the web was awash with fans talking about suspected sightings of The Silence in previous episodes, even previous series…even from years earlier! and I can assure you there was no connection with Moffiets creations, it was all just the fans 'finding' clues because they wanted there to be a deeper meaning than was ever intended..

I totally agree. Even the best of the best creature suits or make ups can look pretty awful when not lit, filmed and edited properly. I look at the leaked photos and cringe cos all I see are the faults!

I'm reminded ages ago of visiting a traveling exhibition of Dr.W props and whatnot, and it was not lost on me why it was all so carefully staged and lit — reinforced by a moment when someone opened a door they oughtn't have and sent a beam of lovely, bright sunlight light across the exhibit.  :3

I tell my students that anyone can create a fantastic creature, prosthetic, puppet etc with vast quantities of time and money but that the REAL measure of a make up effects artist is knowing what you can get away with. With experience you know how something will read on camera, how it will reflect light, how the director and editor will cut it. You know how to create the effect and how to instruct the director and camera operator on how best to shoot it. This way you can create creatures and effects with highly limited money and very little time but that will still look incredible on camera. However…..take away all the lighting and camera trickery and expose your creation to the harsh light of day (or fluorescents!) and 'hoo boy!' they can look pretty hokey!

Granted, I suspect they have more time — and ironically more budget — to put into their projects than any one piece of production design tends to get, barring the best hero bits.

Time is always the biggest problem with professional work. There is a limit to how many people you can throw at a project and no amount of money will buy you more hours to get the stuff done. When working on our own projects we can spread the work over unlimited time to get it done 'just right' with no cut off date. I'd much rather have more time and less money…any day!

I wont search the images, i always like to get the surprise when i finally see the episodes! The impact is always better! But ill be thinking of you when i start watching the new season ;) Im sure they will be awesome as always! And ill have a lot of questions about them.

I really don't know how the fans find out where we are going to shoot! I suspect that there MUST be leaks from within the production as 20 to 30 people arrived with cameras, videos and autograph books!

I'll be happy to answer any and all questions when the show has aired and I'm at liberty to talk about my work.

Haha xD Withing the production... oh my! that many?! And do those people who come for autographs get them? Does it become somehow more difficult to shoot with so many ones around trying to get the spoilers? Or you still keep the same rythm at the work?  Ive never been on a shoot of anything before, only saw that kind of environment on TV.   Not much happens in my country after all!

Thanks a lot for being always so thoughtful and sharing your time with everyone who comments on your page and works ^^ You always take time to answer my comments! And i appreciate that a lot!

I've never seen anyone get an autograph during shooting….it's just too expensive to allow holdups like that.

Keeping the public out of the way does cause difficulties. The AD's (gofers) try to shepard them out of the way but when we're shooting in a public place we can't MAKE them not take photo's etc. We live in a free country and you are at liberty to point your camera at anything that is in public view.

For the most part people are very respectful of us working and stay quiet and at a distance…they simply enjoy the spectacle of a bunch of adults pretending to be spacemen and monsters….lol…silly way to make a living really!!!

I perfectly understand...  im sure even if fans knew that, they would still keep trying to get an autograph... Hopes would never faid. But time cannot be waisted when shooting. It must be a bit stressing to know that and try to get everything perfect as soon as possible, avoiding all kind of holdups.

Yeah, understand perfectly. Never heard all of this from the perspective of someone from the inner. Always read it from fans side.  And its all so different, and interesting.

Oh my ^^ I think its the perfect way to live! It makes also others lives more enjoyable when one can sit down and watch doctor who at home, and forget about life problems for an hour ^^
And if i could work on this all like you do, i would really appreciate it. Its one of those jobs you can say, you make your hobby into work.
Be able to say, that ones work is to build kids childhood. If i can say this one day, ill feel proud, i think.

And sorry for my bad english ones again. Donīt know what happens to me lately, but im writting even worse than usually.

Now I'm torn! I really want to see your creation, but It feels sorta wrong seeing it ahead of time

Speaking of something completely different btw (Sunshine Spoilers below) Ļ

I watched Sunshine like you recommended, and it was awesome! I just wish they'd shown some clearer shots of Pinbacker, but I'm not sure if they decided on that blurry approach because of the symbolism or cus they didn't feel the makeup-effect was good enough, either way I loved the way he looked. When they pulled the skin off his arm I was like "Oh man, thats disgusting!   ", I had to rewind and watch it again.

I think the make up was hidden by directorial choice and not because it was bad or anything. And yes…the arm skinning WAS pretty disgusting!!

Yea that seems more likely, I thought it was annoying at times and found myself twisting my head to try to see what was going on in some of the scenes, but it did add to that eerie/crazed feeling. I found a youtube clip that showed some of the process in creating his suit though, it looked pretty awesome and well made with alot of details (think they added some of his clothing being burned into his skin, but 240p is not my friend so it could have been just charring) they even painted it with UV paint to make it look like it was glowing from the inside. Thought that looked way cooler than the movie result, my friend didn't even understand that he was supposed to be sunburnt because she couldn't see it FacePalm -Request

Do you find it frustrating when you've been putting alot of time into a suit, or makeup, but instead of highlighting your work with CGI they obscure it?

I have a very philosophical approach to my professional work…put simply: its not mine! I am one of many tools used by the director to put HIS vision on the screen. What he does may not be how I would have done it but he's paying me to help him tell his story. If I disagree with the end result I always have the freedom to go home, do my own work MY way and put MY vision up for people to see. It's the only way to survive as a commercial artist, if you start getting precious over everything you do then you'll end up so frustrated that you'll have a coronary before you're forty! When I'm supervising a job and people start to moan and whine about things they don't agree with or like artistically I tell them quite simply: 'If you want to do your own art fuck off home and do it there!…' We are commercial artists who do WORK that looks like art.
