More from Wizards Vs. Aliens. Varg and Lexi are the children of the Nekross King (see my previous posting). Their characters had a quite troubled genesis and I had actually sculpted a full sized maquette of a totally different design before it was decided to opt for a much more cartoonish, child friendly approach for the whole show (sadly I have no pics of the original design) so it was back to the drawing board for a rapid rethink!
1 to 5 – I sketched these directly into my computer, a technique I really dislike as these somewhat lackluster efforts prove. My favourite was number 4 but the clients liked 5 so that’s the design I developed in 3D.
6 to 9 – The initial sculpt of Varg’s prosthetics. Before this is finally detailed the sculpt will be divided up into smaller sections and placed on other formers. The final make up consisted of 4 pieces: a headpiece, a face, a chin and a neck. The lower part of his head tentacles were sculpted separately and are the same for all 3 of the characters that has them. This is because they are animatronic and it allows the mechanics to mass-produce them as units that will fit all the characters.
10 and 11 – Varg in all his evil glory.
Main Picture – Varg and his sister Lexi (on the right). Neill Gorton sculpted Lexi’s make up and gave her a softer, more feminine appearance. Here you can see their radio controlled head tentacles in action, one with an extra eye and the other with a little mouth, Adrian Parish, who also designed and built the mechanics, operates them off camera. The beautiful costumes were also created by Millennium FX and were designed and built by Lou Elsey and her team
We actually wasted a whole bunch of time chasing down a totally different design route on this one. But once we got back on track the whole thing from design to shoot was probably about 10 to 12 weeks. This includes both Varg and Lexi (his sister) their costumes and five guards costumes, the king from design to shoot, Randell Moon (a sort of goblin guy) from design to shoot and other bits and bobs...like a bionic back pack!!....so all in all a huge amount of work!!....but fun though!
Sorry for the delay in getting back to your reply, have been quite busy again. 10 to 12 weeks? Thats really impressive, and even going down a different route to begin with sounds interesting. I love how everything starts and all comes together at the end with things like the costumes, characters, designs, etc. Sounds like a lot of fun! Thank you
You are very welcome....and don't worry about the delay in replying, I do the same all the time, set aside mails 'to be answered later' and then lose track of them!
Going down different routes is always fun on a job if you have the time...it's a bit like hunting: the pursuit is often more than fun than the end result!
Stunning work. I've started watching this show on you tube after seeing your work. Always look forward when you post these. Ever think of trying out for Faceoff?
Well I hope you're enjoying the show...I'm currently building new characters for season 2.
Face Off is an American show I believe, we get it on satellite TV here in the UK but I don't think there's ever been a show with British effects artists. I've also probably been doing this for too long now to qualify anyway.
