Back in 2000 Bob Keen (of Hellraiser fame) was hired to develop a video game sequel to John Carpenter's movie The Thing.

Bob came up with a truly great story line that was both prequel and sequel to the movie and brought in myself to do creature concepts and my long time buddy Mat O'Toole to do character design.

Still to this day I don't know what really happened....I kinda suspect our ideas and designs were just to expensive or difficult to turn into a feasible game....but about 3 months into the project we all found ourselves 'replaced'. No one actually said it in so many words but I suspect we were all fired!!....lol...I'm happy to say that for all 3 of us it's the only time that's ever happened!!

This is a 'Rupture'....a large manifestation of the Thing similar to the final creature seen in the movie.

well, most of the creatures that were made for the movie still had original parts before the alien portion asserted itself. Is that the route they went with the game? Still have human/animal portions, but then the extreme areas were alien?

That's how I would have interpreted the artwork if I was ever asked to come up with designs. Regardless, this is awesome work, as always!

Yup we got paid just fine....just one day our services were no longer required!

The original concept for both film and game was that the Thing is made up from ALL the creatures it has encountered throughout the universe (it arrives on Earth in a flying saucer remember!).

The game we wanted to make explored many of the aliens the Thing had absorbed as well as it's human victims.

This piece makes me think of a group of students and their teacher out on a visit to the local nuclear plant facility. The facility had a terrible accident (one of the local pranksters thought it would be funny to spike their lunch with a little plutonium) and this is what became of the kids and teacher. The kids huddled around the teacher for protection but found themselves instead being combined together as one.

Enter the Toxic Crusader.

Howed you know? Only way to have a good hero is to have a great villain, and the best are the ones who don't know they are villains. Something about his morals and values being a bit skewed. L()L
