Sydney the Cyclops by Kaduflyer Sydney the Cyclops by Kaduflyer
Whilst teaching a course at The Neill Gorton Effects Studio I did a 'how to make a simple eye' demonstration. It is said that 'necessity is the mother of invention', but in my case it's more normally: 'laziness is the mother of invention' hence: I couldn't be bothered to make another eye for the sculpting demo and Sydney here is the result.
Originally I thought he was a farmer/hick type and made him weathered and scruffy looking, but looking at him now he kinda reminds me of Ed Gein (for those of you who don't know Gein was a famous cannibalistic serial killer around which the Texas Chainsaw movies are very loosely based)....so as always I'll leave the interpretation up to you guys...hick or sick, it's your choice!!!

Have you been in the Appalachian Mountains because it looks like you have when seeing that thing

I imagined him more on an ancient, battered John Deere tractor toiling across the cornfields of Iowa….but he could just as easily be an Appalachian Mountain 'man'. However, I'm British and have been to neither Iowa nor the Appalachian Mountains; but the vastness of the USA seems more appropriate for these type of characters than the tiny Isle I live on.

Hey buddy I'm actually from New York not New York City but New York upstate and what you said is not true about us but Appalachian people do look hideous not all of them but some majority and down in Appalachia they would call you a brittle that meaning that you have never worked a true day of work being like in a field or something but I've been there and it sucks what you said was not good America is not all bad or inbred and fun fact if you're real British you should know what this is do you know of Doc Martin TV series because I watch it all the time

Might be some misunderstanding here and I didn't mean to cause offence; I'm not suggesting for one second that all Americans are like old Sydney here. What I meant was that America is a huge country, with many sparsely populated areas where you can believe that freaks/mutants like those in the Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn type movies could exist. Britain on the other hand is very small with almost no region being more than a few hours from civilisation, making it harder to believe that such things could exist without being noticed.

I've never seen Doc Martin (I'm not much of a TV watcher) so don't understand the connection….sorry.

Okay sorry about lashing out at you but I've been cool to my face buy a British man that I was nothing more than an inbred sorry about that though that bastard sad my mom was a retard because she drives truck and she's a nurse sorry about that no hard feelings? Or do I have to break out the switchblades

There's certainly no hard feelings or problems from my point of view…so keep the switchblades in your pocket! :)

The problem sometimes with typing messages here or Facebook etc. is that what's typed with a smile isn't read the same way (we can't put our expressions in words!) and this can lead to misunderstandings.

I've been very lucky in my work and it's allowed me to travel all over the world and in every country I've ever visited most of the people I meet are friendly and cool and then there are some people who are just assholes…not because they are from one country or another, not because of their religion or culture or skin colour, but simply because they are just assholes. It sounds like the British guy who said those things to you falls into the asshole group…and I'm sorry you had to experience that.

And just to say: I think a mom who's a nurse and drives a truck is fucking cool!…just saying!

:)

It wasn't that big of a experience in fact I saw his dumb ass insult a mob member and if my calculations are correct he had a very bad day that's why I mentioned switchblades lol 😉

I love how you can see some of his personality or character, just by the pose and expression.

It was just my way of solving a design problem and trying to be a little different from everyone else. It seems to have worked as quite a few have commented on his double brows!!

I don't mind you featuring him on FB....I'm grateful for the exposure to be honest. I've recently closed down my own faceBook account after it got hacked and my entire address book got spammed...and I do mean everyone; my clients, bank, solicitor...all of em got random porn, viagra and diet pill ads and a message that declared: 'RespecT!' (the spellings no typo).

I just read your journal, congrats on the Spectrum entry!!

It was a bummer getting hacked...but it gave me an excuse to close my FB account. I only opened one because someone had started a 'fan' page for me and the only way to get it closed down was to show I had a legit page. Personally I found FB to be the pedlar of inane rubbish that I suspected it would be...I really don't get it at all.

I'm with you on the FB. I shouldn't be on there but my wife convinced me that it would be a good way to keep getting my name out there. The downside is the people that pop up out of my past that I don't have an interest in reconnecting with. Like the ones that I shared a cell with or did meth with....(hee hee)
I didn't realize someone was promoting your work on FB. That's kind of odd. Kind of like a 'Misery' Kathy Bates thing huh?
A few years ago I joined FB just because someone was taking my images and selling them on shwag like coffee mugs, hats, etc.
I immediately deleted my account after I 'convinced' him he shouldn't do that shit anymore.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend man!
Take care

I don't think the 'fan page' was quite in the Misery vein of things (at least I hope not), it's just that I'm extremely uncomfortable with that kind of attention. Sometimes people think that because I work in the film industry that somehow I must be famous and I go to great lengths to point out that I'm far, far, far from that and that I'm just one of 1000's of people who contribute to making a movie. So when I was in Germany working on a movie and some of my German make up assistants told me they knew my work through my 'fan page' I was like "eh???" and was then horribly embarrassed when they showed it to me and I had to convince them that it was nothing to do with me.
Anyway the fan page is gone...and so am I. But your wife is right, it's a great place to promote yourself and as artists we must get our work out there, to be seen and enjoyed (otherwise what's the point eh?) but I just can't deal with all the other nonsense that FB brings with it. I am gamefully employed at the moment so need no promoting, but one day when the work dries up maybe I will need to get out there and sell myself and when that day arrives I'm sure FB will be one of my first port of calls.

Hope your enjoying a restful Easter hols.
