Dr Who - The Crooked Man - design sketches. by Kaduflyer Dr Who - The Crooked Man - design sketches. by Kaduflyer
I got involved quite early in the development of this episode that eventually became 'Hide'. I did a whole load of designs for an early draft when the concept and story was quite radically different from what finally got shot, but I'm not going to post them here as I think perhaps both the original creature and original story idea might well be resurrected at a later date...it was a very cool idea.

As the story evolved I was urged to give the creature more and more twisted human features. I really wanted to go with the top concept as I drew it, but I was ordered to change the head and so grafted on the human one you see underneath it....and that was what was finally approved.

That was a fantastic episode, and the ability to see the progress and development of a creature in my favorite show is really amazing. Thanks for posting all of these! It's really cool!

And you did a fantastic job! I nearly had a heart attack (okay, okay one of many "nearly heart attacks) when we finally got a close up of the creature!

By the way, I know this is random, but I'm currently working on a Doctor Who fanfiction, and since you work up close and personal with the show, I wanted to get your input. Would you be willing to give me some critiques?

I'm always happy to help in whatever capacity I can, though I'm not sure my involvement in the show qualifies me for critiquing Dr Who fiction in general but I have done some writing myself so can at least have some sort of opinion.

Awesome! I would really appreciate it! I only have two chapters so far, but I'm currently working on chapter three, and I have many more to come :)

you're never too old! I just started using those Prismacolor markers after 30+ years of drawing with ink! I love them!

The day I discovered digital art was the day I ceased experimenting...after years of wrestling with different mediums and materials and never feeling fully comfortable with any of them it was like an epiphany...and I'll never go back!

I have a very pragmatic approach to art. I have absolutely no interest in the 'journey' and care only for the end result, the story the piece tells...to me that's all that counts. Because I think like this I don't have any sentimental attachment to the canvas, or paper or paint or whatever...so digital art is perfect for me...don't hate me for it...lol

Maybe I'm wrong, but i think you are quite good with the stuff you are doing... But seriously: This design and the final model are completely mindblowing!

What's the backstory? A human twisted by the temporal chaos of the pocket dimension?
Some indigenous lifeform?

I can't go into all the details but you've kinda guessed pretty close. The original idea had the 'hider' more as a twisted human, but as the story evolved it became more like some other dimensional creature, not warped but just the result of a different evolution....the final design, rightly or wrongly, had left over elements from the earlier ideas.

Wow. Thanks for letting us see these. I love the distorted anatomy, it's all there, but melted or stretched, making the creature very plausible and horribly believable.

As I was watching it I wondered if you had anything to do with this particular creature! He was definitely one of the more creepy creatures I have seen.

Most people working on the show try and push it as far as they can as far as scares go...it's the BBC bigwigs who have to rein it in all the time.
