Dr Who - The Crooked Man - Shoot by Kaduflyer Dr Who - The Crooked Man - Shoot by Kaduflyer
On location in sunny wales....yeah it looks sunny but trust me, it poured down everyday!!!!!

1.The man behind the mask. This is Aiden Cooke the performer who bought the Crooked Man to life.
2/3/4 and 5. It was essential that the creature should never look the same each time we saw it and it was that idea which drove the design, however all would have been in vain without Aiden's extraordinary performance as he wriggled, crawled, jerked and limped his way through the Welsh forests.
6 and 7. Crash mats at the ready Aiden and Matt Smith get ready for the Dr Vs. Crooked Man wrestling bout. In the story the Dr wins (of course) on the day Matt wasn't quite so lucky and took quite a battering from the metal stilts in the Crooked Man's arms...sorry Matt!!

I cannot believe I stumbled upon this! I saw the concept art and immediately knew what episode the design was for and then I came to see this. I loved this creature design so much. This is incredible!

I've been doing this stuff for many, many years now and The Crooked Man is the first thing I've made that was genuinely creepy even when seen 'in the flesh' so to speak...as he wriggled across floors in that old mansion he really creeped me out!

Brilliant design~! Can't wait to see whichever episode this might be to see how the Crooked Man moves- I can imagine the movement being a HUGE part of how the creature's effectiveness comes across.

His movement was VERY unsettling to see on set....in the episode the have kept his appearances to a minimum and although I approve of this (better to leave the audience wanting more!) it does leave some of the amazing performance unseen.

Like everyone in my industry I'm self employed so work for many companies.
The BBC no have their own special make up effects department and all such work is out sourced. All the creature/make up work for Dr Who, Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures was done by Millennium FX and it was they who hired me to do this.

Woe! How did Matt Smith take it?

If that thing was after me, acting or not, I would hope I had peed prior to encounter.

How he take the beating with the stilts you mean?...all in a days work! He gives the role his all and I've never seen him not smiling a real pleasure to work with!

Everyone on set gets used to the rubber monsters lurking about...but the crooked man was possibly THE most disturbing of them all! He was VERY unsettling creeping towards you on the floor and everyone (myself included) was a little creeped out by it!

I actually watched a Let's Play for an 8-bit video game called The Crooked Man. It looked pretty cool.

I didn't realize this was more of a "tale" than that. I'm intrigued!

This season has had some ups and downs...it sometimes tries to be too clever for it's own good I think..or maybe it's just me getting lost in the maze of plot contrivances!

Saw the episode when it aired and I was suitably scared, you did a great job! As did the actor wearing the suit! But I did like the ending.... all monster movies should turn out like that!

Oh absolutely. It only worked because we didn't see it coming. Well played!

Hope you continue to get lots of work; I don't miss that side of the industry. The FEAR as a job was coming to an end! Hope you get lots of good runs, working with nice people, doing interesting work in draught-free workshops!

The fear of not working comes with the territory...and yes it is scary...but I've been very lucky over the years and although I'll never be rich I have managed to stay (mostly) buoyant!

Looking at your homepage it looks like we could be neighbours...I live in Buckinghamshire to...just out side of Marlow.

Hurrah for being buoyant!

I live in Devon, was just invited to take part in an exhibition in Bucks. We're pretty rural here, with what my kids call "cow fields" all around. Driving through Bucks to drop off my work at the gallery my daughter yelled excitedly "LOOK!!! HOUSE fields!!!!" More buildings in one place that she'd ever seen before!

Well I hope the exhibition goes (or went..) well.

The down side of going totally digital with my 2D work is never being able to have an exhibition and sell 'originals'...though for me that's also part of the attraction; no one can 'own' digital art but everyone can have it (yeah...it's the old hippy in me...sorry!)

Congratulations then on your show...I hope you get many more...and I'll keep an eye out for your work in Bucks galleries.

Wow, this guy looks incredibly scary. Can't wait to see the episode.
So, if your brief was he shouldn't look the same from different angles, then hey, you've nailed it.
Love your imagination, and incredible skills!
