Charron is the boatman who ferries the dead over the river Styxx.
In the original Greek legends he was an old, filthy man who often mocked the dead as he took them to hell, an idea which really struck a chord with me. More recently he has been sort of mixed up with the medieval image of Death (a robed skeleton with scythe) which is what the Clash remake went for.
In the script he's described as being fused with his boat so that's what this guy's bony cowl represents...I was trying to get the Death figures robe in and the old mocking geezer AND the 'fused with boat' idea...lol....I don't think anyone on the production quite got it.
The design eventually used combined the body from another of my maquettes with the head from my good buddy Mat O'Toole's design. However neither Mat nor myself were involved with the finished piece and both of us were a little disappointed with the final result......ho hum!
Thank you...the one in the movie was about the size you mention...for me I always thought he should be big, but not inhumanly big, 6 and half feet or some such...I'm not keen on everything in fantasy movies having to be gigantic..but that;'s just me.
I guess I picture it being big and tall is just from the growth he would take from absorbing the wood of the boat. Not the figure itself, but the wood protruding over his head. I like your idea way more than the basic cloaked skull look. Gotta have those long nasty fingers though! Thanks for the reply.
