A silicone puppet head from 'Kurtlar Vadisi Iraq' the movie spin off to Turkey's highest rated TV show 'Valley of the Wolves'.
This guy gets a bullet through the head, exiting through his eye. This kind of effect is only on screen for a few frames (less than a second of film time) so anatomical accuracy isn't the issue here. A small explosive charge (a squib) is placed in the eye socket and a blood bag fixed over that. The removable eye section (seen on the guys shoulder in the first photo) is put back into place and any gaps filled with vaseline coloured the same as the skin (second photo). When the squib is exploded it ruptures the blood bag and blows the eye section away. The eye section exits frame so fast you never notice that it's just one big lump and the spray of blood masks the somewhat fake looking hole.
The beauty of doing a gag this way and not with a head that gets destroyed in the process is that with a little clean up and reset the gag can be shot on time after time very quickly and for very little extra cost.
Unfortunately the movie was only ever shown in Turkey and the Middle East...it's a Turkish language film...so you'll probably never get the chance. I haven't even seen it myself.
Ahhh, so THAT'S how it's done! I always wondered how you managed to do stuff like that without losing the whole head. (and is it just me or does this one remind anyone of the late Graham Chapman in Life of Brian? XD)
Hahaha..
